A group of 22 riders braved the cold, there were reports of minus –8DegC on some doorsteps, and arrived on time at the start point. So, we left late. Training had already got underway for Richard Sterry as he was seen heading off for his 60-mile ride in preparation for 24hr marathon later in the year.
A frozen free hub meant Cheryl was missing by the time we got to Colley hill.
We took the fast route across the golf course towards Walton and found Richard pushing his bike back home. His 60 miles had come to an abrupt halt, due to more frozen bits. Many bits were now beginning to freeze so we tried to up the pace and warm up.
We followed the fast track down towards the back end of Epsom race track and after a puncture stop or two wound our way back to Headley and then more fast track to Leatherhead downs golf course and on to Brockett’s for welcomed Tea and Warmth.
Despite the fast trails the tea stop was a long time coming as the cold took its toll on bikes and bodies. We were late leaving so the planned route back was abandoned and we followed the same route back to Headley and back across the Golf course to Reigate.
We split up into two groups as the faster riders were not finding benefit in waiting for the back bunch. The last riders arrived back a bit late, about 1:25 and only minus 3DegC by now.
We had a couple of spillages on the icy roads and Mark tried out his home made padding, available at all good bike shops soon!
To all those back markers, Thanks!
