Unchained Medley

There was a flush of damp in the air when nine set off from the Drome for steady miles via a loop to Maison du Velo in Cranleigh but everyone was well aware that it was one of those glorious autumnal rides where the leaves, mist and mellow fruitfulness bring a smile to the face and a little extra energy to the legs.

Our route went via Lodge Lane, Horley and Charlwood to the little rise up to Rusper. John Mc was along for a few steady miles after a no-holds-barred G5 the previous day. I would say he was great to draft on the front but with his new slimline climbing physique it was like trying to draft a Rizla paper.  Also along was Graham H whose lane wisdom came in handy more than once.

After Rusper, a small hiatus for Keith who experienced a minor mechanical. It's not surprise... after all Mr Christie finds himself locked into a 365 day miles battle with another rider on Strava. This may have started as a bit of fund but has become deadly serious in recent weeks as both riders start to up their mileage to scare the other. Consequently, instead of a once-weekly G3, he's out most days munching through routes around the south east to overcome his nemesis.

Onwards via Kingsland to Capel, Ockley and then Mole Street and Standon Lane. Finally, a jink up to Ellen's Green, Cox Green and Baynards Lane to Cranleigh.

On arrival at Maison du Velo, chairs were at a premium but soon the other riders occupying the warm seats recognised in RCC a force not to be trifled with and handed over their sofas so we could quaff our Lattes and munch our toasties in suitable luxury.

Returning via Ewhurst, it was on the short, sharp hill before Cotton Row that the author's chain snapped and parted company with the bike in spectacular fashion. I'd like to say it was due to the incredible number of Watts I was putting through the pedals. However, realistically, I suspect 6,000 miles before a chain change is just too long. Also, we had to admit with shame that among those of us who tried to fix the snapped item that none of us had a chainbreaker. Not that this stopped us using all the tools to hand to try and get the wretched pin out... but it wasn't to be.

How the rest got home, I cannot say... for I was at the side of the road waiting for the 6th emergency service to come and pick me up. I did manage to cover around 1 mile pushing myself along the road as if riding a balance bike, but the look wasn't great.

Thanks to all the riders along for the ride, a lovely day and one that I was gutted not to finish!
