Nutfield to Brighton and back.. in time for lunch

There is a clear general uplift in ability visible each year on many set piece rides and this one in particular showed what RCC riders are now routinely capable of.

Team Costello AKA G5 were first to reach the seafront at Brighton with their usual tight, disciplined and consistent quick pace. A few punctures and mechanicals along the way saw others a little delayed but overall, the sea was seen before 9.30am for most.

The photo looks a little bit light... only because of a shiny new coffee shop right on the seafront that tempted a lot of RCC shirts inside with its offer of a bit more warmth than the brisk and drizzle threatening morning outside. By the time those who stuck with tradition at the Angel 'Meeting Place' had munched down their baps and coffee, chilly limbs were eager to get underway.

Apologies to all who turned up to find the shutter already shut for the team pic but you'll understand why.

The G5s headed off first followed by a G2/3 group that kept up a consistency of pace and effort all the way back that saw Reigate reached at 1pm. Particular stars of the day were Elliot Vincent accompanying Dad and Ian T to become the youngest rider to my knowledge to wear the RCC colours on this event. And from the same family Sally Ann whose fitness has shot up in similar style to her brother.

Then Sam, a new G3 - 4 contender who showed great strength all day often on the front (most notably when challenged to try to get up the Warninglid Ramp in his big ring - he managed it!). Also, Sophie who was un-used to such long rides but kept pace the whole way and of course the inspirational Mssr Ormerod who chipped away the miles with his usual stoical good humour.

Commisserations to Dave N and son who were unable to continue after an insurmountable mechanical after Turners Hill... next year!

It may be expensive and it may be roads we often ride on free anway but there's still something special about this particular event and long may it continue.
